In Netflix’s new action-comedy Red Notice, Netflix brings fans an epic, action-packed heist adventure led by an incredible ensemble comprised of Gal Gadot, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, and Ryan Reynolds.

At the center of the film’s crazy treasure hunt/heist are a trio of ancient relics connected to Egyptian Queen Cleopatra: a trio of elaborately crafted golden and bejeweled eggs said to have been gifted to Cleopatra as a wedding gift from Marc Antony.

According to the film’s lore, the eggs were thought to have been nothing more than a myth until two of the eggs were unearthed in 1907 outside of Cario. The third was said to have been lost to history, but over the course of the film we discover the third egg was indeed out there and had been taken to a secret German bunker where it is later discovered.

It’s an incredible story and given how frequently heist movies involving art and artifacts tend to draw upon real-life artifacts for inspiration, it begs the question are Cleopatra’s bejeweled eggs real or a work of fiction crafted by the Red Notice writers?

While the tale was craftily woven and sounded legitimate, Red Notice is not based on a real story and the artifacts at the heart of the movie are fictional.

While the backstory seemed real, given its roots to real figures from history, the story of Marc Antony gifting the eggs to Cleopatra as a wedding gift was entirely made up for the movie. In other words, sorry folks you won’t be seeing any of the three bejeweled eggs in art museums around the globe!
