She also advanced to the semifinals of the 2017 Wuhan Open, where she defeated Caroline Wozniacki for her maiden top-10 victory.
She reached her second Premier 5 semifinal at the Italian Open in 2019, defeating Petra Kvitová and others.
In 2020, Sakkari reached the fourth round of both the Australian and US Opens.
In 2021, she became the first Greek woman to reach the semifinals of both the French Open and the US Open.
Maria Sakkari Parents: Angeliki Kanellopoulou, Kostas Sakkaris
The tennis player’s parents are Angeliki Kanellopoulou and Kostas Sakkaris. When she was six years old, her parents introduced her to tennis, and when she was eighteen, she travelled to Barcelona to practice.
Her first two attempts to make the WTA Tour were both unsuccessful.
Mara Irigoyen eliminated her in the first round of qualification at the Rio Open, while Daria Kasatkina eliminated her in the last stage of qualifying at the Bucharest Open.
Despite this, she not only made her WTA Tour debut on her third attempt, but she did so at a major, qualifying for the US Open.
